We have been working as a class to make sure that we are using evidence to support our responses in the classroom. The students are practicing saying things like “According to the text…” or “The Author states…”. These sentence starters are helping them to remember to cite the evidence when they are responding to a question. In the classroom we have made it a goal to cite text evidence EVERY TIME we answer a question, in writing or verbally. As a class we are getting to be really good at this and the students are even starting to “catch” each other when they provide text evidence. This is a great thing to practice at home too. When you read with your child ask them questions about what they read and remind them to support their answers with evidence from the text. This encourages them to extend their deep thinking to all areas of their life. By doing so this will be come automatic for them!
We have started a new unit on Fractions in math. This unit will focus heavily on making fractions, identifying fractions, comparing fractions, equivalent fractions, and fractions on the number line. This concept has been introduced to many of the students through the use of ST Math. I have been so excited to see the students making connections between what they are learning with JiJi and what we are doing in class. I have noticed that many of the students struggle with putting fractions on the number line. This is an area we will focus on later in the math module, but today I found a video on our Eureka Math site that can explain a little better what your child will be expected to do when we get to this part of the module. You can access the video here:
Feel free to view this short 5 minute video before we get to this section of the math module. It may give you a better idea of what your child will be expected to do!
Have a great weekend!
Just before Winter Break our class had another Golden Book signer! Dawson was recognized for his outstanding leadership in the classroom. Dawson works to be proactive and always makes sure to do what is expected of him. He puts his first things first each day by making sure he always gets his work finished, and does his best work each time!
Dawson is an excellent leader in the classroom and we are so proud to have him as a part of our third grade family!
This afternoon your child will be bringing home his or her Achievement Record in their take home folder. These Achievement Records will give you an indication as to how your child is performing at school at the mid point in the year. Please take some time to review these with your child. Some students will have additional paperwork with the Achievement Record. Please review these and sign and return to school if needed. The Achievement Records do not need to be signed and returned to school.
I also hope you had time over our Winter Break to look at your child’s Leadership Notebook with them. The students are very proud of the notebooks and the goals they are setting. Each time they meet their goals we celebrate and I hope they are sharing the news with you at home so that you can celebrate too!
As always, please feel free to email me or call with any questions you may have! Thanks for supporting our hard work at school with all that you do from home!
